The original chain link fence was installed in the 1950's to enclose the football and baseball field areas. Over the years, the field had to be reduced to provide parking for the construction of the Media Center and the Gym. Unfortunately that meant that we lost our regulation field size. A playground area was built on the north end of the field. This was segmented from the field by a chain link fence. In the late 90's, the school added fencing around certain areas to secure the facility. With the building of Communion Hall, we used our own staff to construct and install additional fencing. This knowledge of fence construction was used to begin the job of replacing the field fencing.
Each summer we hire individuals to help us complete the projects that we have on tap for the complex. In the summer of 2009, we used full time employees John Farrell, Michael Sammons and Fernando Luna to plan, install and paint the fencing. However the bulk of the work was done by summer help Tommy Barton, Brantley Adams and to a lesser extent Alex Adams. (Alex started with us late in the summer.) All metal was cut to the proper dimensions. The metal was then placed in a jig that we built that aligned each piece of so that all panels were built the same. Two different sized panels were built. One was for a 4 foot high fence and one was for a 6 foot high perimeter fence. Once all of the panels were constructed, the operation moved to the field for installation. At this point parishioner Scott Simms helped us by using his tractor to pull out the old fence posts and drill holes for the new.
Unfortunately we discovered that even though the new fence was installed exactly where the old fence had been, there was a sight issue when cars were stopped at the corner of Materhorn and Gus Thomasson. So we moved the fence back an additional 12 feet from the street and that fixed the problem.
Please enjoy the pictures of this project.
